How the word torpedo connects to Israeli politics – discover the intriguing story in our latest blog.
To expand its vocabulary and create new words, modern Hebrew has utilized and continues to utilize several methods. Hebrew takes words from the Bible, from the Mishnaic Hebrew, and from medieval literature, giving them new meanings. For example, the word 'חשמל' (electricity); its origin is in the Bible, but in modern Hebrew, it has a new meaning.
Additionally, Hebrew has incorporated and continues to incorporate many foreign words. From these words, new roots are sometimes created, and from these roots, new verbs, adjectives, and nouns are formed. The root is created by extracting the consonants from the foreign word.
For example, the foreign word "catalog" – from which the Hebrew root קטל"ג was created, and from it the verb 'לקטלג' (to catalog), meaning to categorize or label people.
In the media in Israel, it is reported that 'Bibi Netanyahu is לטרפד (torpedoing) the hostage deal.' We won't delve into politics (at least not this time). The origin of the verb is the foreign word 'torpedo.' From it, the root טרפ"ד was derived, and from it the verb לטרפד, meaning to damage or destroy, like launching a torpedo.
It’s important to note that these verbs are almost all created in the 'פיעל' (Piel) verb form, in its passive form 'פועל' (Pual), and in the 'התפעל' (Hitpael) verb form, because only in these forms can verbs with roots that have four or more consonants be conjugated.
